Air Jordan 1 History & Timeline: What to Know About Air Jordan 1

There was 23 different color variations released, and this is not including the three colorways of the Air Jordan I KO. The Birth of the 1After the partnership with Michael and the Swoosh was set, it was up to Nike designer Peter Moore to create the first signature shoe for the man that would become the game’s greatest player ever. Believe it or not, that was a lot of money for a sneaker back then, which meant the Air Jordan line was elevated to a higher tier right from the beginning.

Jordan was not happy with the design, stating that he would look ridiculous on the court. Eventually, Jordan would take to the court wearing the Air Jordan 1 and attract the attention of early sneakerheads. A combination of supple leather, a large Nike Swoosh and adorned the athletic sneaker. Drawn on the back of a napkin by Moore, the Wings logo was the combination of Jordan and Nike.

That’s the design and success story of one of the most famous sneakers in Nike’s history. For almost 40 years, the Nike Air Jordan 1 has been a key shoe in the sneaker community. Its influence is undeniable, with Nike continuing to release collaborations and colourways of this classic design. Who knows how different the world of sneakers would have looked if Jordan had of left Nike. For over three decades, the Jordan 1 has been a symbol of any sneakerhead.

Jordan was very close to signing with adidas but, yet again, was met with disappointment. During the mid-1980s, adidas was not interested in expanding its product offering to basketball, something that greatly upset Jordan. In the end, he would sign with Nike, accepting a $500,000 package that would see him get his own signature shoe.

Notable Nike Air Jordan 1 Releases

The New York Times didn't even mention college player of the year Jordan until near the end of its draft report. Drew Hammell, aka @nikestories, takes us through the true stories behind Nike's Jordan Brand and its catalog of seminal silhouettes, starting with the Air Jordan 1. "Today does not allow individuals to do what Peter Moore did. Peter Moore was, and is, in my mind one of the most honorable human beings I've ever been around. He was above reproach and he gave me guidance to make me a better person." Nike co-founder Phil Knight told USA Today in 2015 that Moore and Strasser were the "MVPs" of the partnership.

(I highly recommend watching Jordan's docuseries The Last Dance on Netflix for the full backstory). In fact, those Off-White Jordan 1’s can currently be seen at prices of about $6,000 after three years of release when they only retailed for $190. It started off with the third overall pick in the 1984 NBA Draft, Michael Jordan.

Sneaker Files is an online magazine specializing in Sneaker News, Release Dates, and History since 2006. The creation of SF started with a passion for sneakers and sharing our knowledge throughout the years of collecting. We’re committed to providing accurate information across all sneaker brands, giving our expertise and insider information. From early leaks, compiling lists of colorways on a specific model, an updated release calendar, and everything in between. Nike loved this idea so much that they encouraged MJ to wear the shoes, and Nike would pay the fees. In result, Nike gave the the Air Jordan 1 “The shoe banned by the NBA” label.

The Technology

The original black and blue Jordan 1 was never worn by Michael Jordan on court. When Strasser died unexpectedly in 1993, the Germany-based brand named Moore head of its North American operations. He is credited with breathing life back into the brand, redesigning the Adidas logo, launching the Adidas Equipment line, and having a lasting impact on the brand's design. Dumas credited Moore with setting the foundation for the company's early design efforts, which included the ubiquitous Nike advertising posters that graced thousands of kids' bedrooms in the 1980s, many of them designed by Moore. "We lost an icon," D'Wayne Edwards, founder of Pensole Lewis College and a former design director of Nike's Jordan brand, told Insider.

The 51% rule states that 51% of a player’s shoes must match the uniform of his team, which the “Banned” Nike Air Ship did not. Nike took this and ran with it, putting out a marketing campaign in its history. The ‘Wings’ logo as we know it today features a basketball with wings coming out from each side, the perfect metaphor and marketing genius for Michael “Air” Jordan and his new signature sneakers.

Over the past 35 years, the Jordan 1 has become a legend in its own right. During that time, the basketball sneaker has been spotted on almost everybody, from musicians to metalheads and celebrities to skateboarders. More importantly, the Jordan 1 kickstarted what we know and love to be Jordan Brand to be today. The first Air Jordan 39 to release, on July 23, is a white-based colorway with a red Jumpman logo on the tongue that Jordan Brand is calling the “Sol,” French for “foundation,” in reference to the ground-level footwork the sneaker is built around. It will be followed on Aug. 6 by the black and white “Lumiere” colorway, named after Paris’ moniker of the City of Light and meant to represent its skyline at night.

On my way to a Bermudian cooking class in Lower Manhattan, I almost collided into an office worker (both of us deep in our iPhones) wearing a charcoal overcoat, dad jeans, and white and pale gray Jordan 1. The designers presented Jordan with old game footage, circa 1991, of him playing in a pair of Air Jordan 6s. On the spot, he gave a dissertation on the cross-step, recounting how his shoe felt on his foot, how his toenails would break under extreme circumstances, and what the physical movement demanded of him. But still, it’s hard not to be at least a little intimidated by the guy whose name is on your paychecks, on the golf course, and on the world’s most popular and longest active line of basketball sneakers. Jordan Brand designers break down the latest game shoe, which is set to release in July.

The Air Jordan 39 borrows from the crackled sections that emerged, using engineered embroidery over ballistic mesh to recreate the effect. Greenspan describes that pattern, the physical trace of Jordan’s movement, as the heartbeat of the shoe. The design team zeroed in on Jordan’s cross-step, a move that successive generations of hoopers learned from him.

The Origins of Flight and His Airness

And it’s hard to tell the difference between those two shoes, even with hindsight, which is why Nike decided to go with the Air Ship’s in the first place, knowing that people would think they were Air Jordan I, which would help sales when they eventually came out. Peter Moore and Nike Vice President, Rob Strasser, had met with Michael Jordan’s agent, David Falk, and decided that ‘Air Jordan’ would be the name of the shoes Michael would wear. In an interview with Slam in 2018, Moore tells the story of flying home from the meeting and on the plane, noticing the plastic wings on a pin that a kid had just received from the flight attendant.

His, Hers, Theirs. The Issue of Gender Representation within the Sneaker Industry.

And as soon as they sold out, Nike would restock them, until the shoe was overstocked, causing the price to drop to $20 in 1985, which would eventually lead to the shelving of the shoe in 1986. By that time, 13 colorways of the Jordan 1 had been released, including “Banned,” “Chicago,” “Retro Royal,” “Carolina Blue,” among others. And though many other colorways would be released in the future, the colorways from that original year remain the most sought after. It was to be none other than Peter C. Moore, Nike’s create director, who would design Jordan’s first shoe. At first glance Jordan didn’t like the Jordan I design, referring to them as “clown shoes,” though he would eventually warm up to them. But since the Air Jordan wouldn’t be ready by the time Jordan’s rookie season started in 1985, he played in Nike Air Ship’s until the Jordan’s were ready in November of that year.

Busch Light Teams Up With Crocs For A Clog and All-Terrain Sandal

But Nike was relentless, going so far as to get Jordan’s parents to bring him to the Nike campus in Oregon. Nike did their best to convince him by presenting their plan for Jordan being an entire brand, not just a shoe. But none of that mattered to Jordan as he simply didn’t like Nike’s shoes as the soles were too thick. It was a change that Nike was happy to make, thus creating the legacy of the Air Jordan.

Newsletter

While most of the shoe’s construction resembles the leather-y OG 1, it features some details that give the shoes a loose, exposed, and prototyped feel, most notably, the oversized swoosh that seems loosely stitched on. Another popular collaboration is the Travis Scott Air Jordan 1, which features an inverted swoosh, an unprecedented design choice for Nike shoes. Coming soon is the Air Dior Jordan 1, featuring a swoosh with an all-over “Dior” print and “Air Dior” text that replaces the “Air Jordan” text on the logo. Some viewed these new takes as sacrilege to an already beautifully constructed pair of shoes, while others embraced it for its aesthetic innovations. Some of the most prestigious retros include a variety of colorways, including the “Fragment,” “UNC,” “Chicago,” “Banned,” “Shattered Backboard”–named after the 1’s that Jordan wore when we broke the backboard in a game– and many more.

For Nike, taking such a huge financial risk was given a safety net in the form of one stipulation. If the partnership didn’t result in an ambitious level of $4 million dollars in sales by the end of the third year, they had the right to end the partnership. I was recently taking an afternoon walk in my New York City neighborhood and I noticed a young girl wearing a navy plaid Catholic school uniform paired with navy and white Jordan 1 mid.

White Shirt + Neutral Trousers

Of course, we know all that happened, and we don’t even want to think about if it didn’t. It’s arguably the shoe that started the market for sneakers in the first place. And no matter where we go from here, the Jordan I will be looked back on by many as the greatest, most endearing sneaker or all time. The Converse Weapon, the Vans Slip-On with the iconic checkerboard print and the Nike Air Max 1 are a few. However, in a market that is inundated with daily launches — enough to make your head spin — there is something about the simplicity of such shoes that sets them apart from the rest. The Air Jordan 1s original run featured the most colorways of any sneaker in the line to date and also included low-top variants.

Only the OG “Chicago” and “Bred” colorways returned in 1994, but since 2001 when it came back again the Air Jordan 1 has returned almost every year in multiple colorways and forms. Air Jordan 1 KOThe canvas-constructed Air Jordan 1 KO from 1986 is perhaps the greatest mystery of the entire Air Jordan line. Nobody can even confirm that ‘KO’ stands for “knockout”, but most would agree that it indeed does and the shoe was designed as a nod to the sport of boxing. Whatever the case, what we do know is that along with the canvas build, other modifications included “AJKO” in place of “Air Jordan” on the wings logo and the use of the Nike Vandal’s sole instead of the usual AJ1 tooling. We’re not sure how nobody seems to be able to shed any light on the origins of the Air Jordan 1 KO, but we’re definitely glad it exists. The Legend BeginsEverything had to work out exactly the way it did for the Air Jordan 1 to exist.

The negotiation process was far from easy, as Falk was demanding a lot from whichever brand wanted to sign the young phenom. Jordan loved adidas and wanted to sign with the German giant, but the company was in a state of flux after founder Adi Dassler's death in 1978 and let Jordan slip through its fingers. However, Footwear News may receive a commission on orders placed through its retail links, and the retailer may receive certain auditable data for accounting purposes. "In today's world of building your own brand he just let the work stand and let other people make commentary on it. To me that just seems real, honest, and natural. I admire that." The midfoot rubber that connects the tooling to the upper has an enlarged version of a pattern found on the Jordan 9’s globe icon.

Though Jordan was not happy about it, he knew just how important this signature deal would be for his career in the long run. In 1984, after nearly losing him to adidas (and Converse), Phil Knight and the team at Nike signed one of the greatest entertainers of all time, Michael Jordan. MJ’s original contract with Nike was valued at $500,000 per year, an unprecedented amount for any athlete at the time. The potential upside for Michael was that it also offered him stock options.

Numerous brands have drawn from Italian exports both literally and figuratively in recent... It wasn’t until July that the rest of the country would gain access, and yet the phenomenon was already well under way. Crucially, as depicted in the movie “Air,” Jordan’s mother Gloria insisted that her son also receive a share of the profits from his shoes. The expectation was to sell a total of $3 million worth of sneakers by the end of Jordan’s fourth year. As David Falk, Jordan’s agent from 1984 to 2003, went on to explain in the documentary, Adidas was “dysfunctional” at the time and, as much as it wanted the young star, wouldn’t have been able to give him his own shoe. Converse, which counted Magic Johnson and Larry Bird among its roster, said it wouldn’t prop up Jordan above its existing NBA stars — leaving room for Nike to swoop in despite then being an underdog in the sneaker landscape.

As expected, a number of Chicago-themed versions dropped, giving Jordan a variety of colourways to choose from. The “Bred,” “Chicago,” and “Black Toe” would make up the pairs Jordan wore, but Nike also released a number of non-Chicago versions. After signing with Nike, Michael Jordan had to wait for almost an entire year to get his first shoe.

Now, years later, Design Indulgences has become a brand that I am incredibly proud of. We've stayed true to our original mission, and we continue to push ourselves to create furniture that exceeds our customers' expectations. It's been an incredible journey, and I can't wait to see what the future holds for us. As we began to grow, I was amazed at the positive response we received. People were thrilled to have a new option for furniture that didn't compromise on style or quality. And as we continued to innovate and expand our offerings, I realized that we were really onto something special.

In These Indulgent Spaces, Designers Go All Out

I got an incredible opportunity to work on House Beautiful‘s first “Whole Home Project,” a fully decorated home with all sponsored products. If you know HB, then you know they’re usually all about color, and that’s not my thing. It was not easy and there were a lot of “cooks in the kitchen,” meaning I had editorial guidelines to meet along with making plenty of sponsors happy. Trying to infuse my style into it became nearly impossible, but I feel that in the end, we achieved a good balance between all the parameters we had to work with. Do I go through a designer if I want to buy one? I gave it to my son and daughter-in-law a few months ago and still haven’t found a new one (until now?) Thanks so much for keeping things light and fun.

She said “you’ve GOT to check out this new designer Leanne–she paints everything white and loves the same things you do.” At that time, Leanne was unknown, and Bonnie was spot on! I jumped on the bandwagon early and have loved every minute watching this designer rise. Leanne creates with such freedom and joy, and she does it all with such deep humility. In my experience yellow will not work on the walls in just any room, but looks better in a room with Southern exposure. It can turn muddy in a room that is inherently dark. I have the lightest buttercream yellow on my living rooms walls. I love it as a sunshiney neutral and I accent it with black. It's perfect and I have never tired of it in the 15 years I've had the walls painted that color.

Also, I just had my living room couch re-upholstered in a yellow velvet; I wouldn't paint an internal room or cabinets a full on yellow. I like to add yellow and mustard yellow to my charcoal gray living room for summer. Looks great with greenery and feels modern in my opinion. I love seeing all your examples of yellow well used. Oh Sherry, Thanks for the memories, my entire house was yellow, black and white in the 60’s and 70’s.

You can choose from various stairway grills to suit your theme. The main door is considered the main entry point of positive energies. Due to laser technology, all the motifs can be done easily on grill designs. Geometric designs such as square, oval, triangle, circle or rectangle can be created in a grill for the main door. You can have a full grill door in a criss-cross, diamond shape grill design for a gorgeous aesthetic vibe. Or you can just have a small inset of grill fixed in the wooden door.

Putting your grill next to herb and spice gardens makes cooking easier and adds a stylish, green look to your space. Alternatively, building wood shelves next to your grill that can display key ingredients as they grow is a visually interesting way to make your outdoor area pop. Cooking, socializing and other seasonal activities are always more fun when you have the right outdoor space — and that includes a functional backyard grilling area! Outdoor kitchens and grilling stations don’t have to follow the limited linear rules of an indoor cooking space. Grills add an extra layer of security to your home, deter intruders and provide good visibility. From a design perspective, grills can elevate the aesthetics of your entrance.

You can turn a dull door into a welcoming space with wooden arches merged with glass and a floral grill. Artistically designed glass arches with a combination of the wooden grill can be a perfect addition to any entrance. You can either go for a traditional iron grill gate design or a modern design.
